The Jig of Jigs

Every once in while you come across a lure that is so good and works in so many applications that you just can’t believe it. In my quest to tie the perfect jig we came up with the AGS jig and it has become that lure that just works for Steelhead when most other things won’t. We started out with our two favorite colors, Pink and Chartreuse and started to figure out how to put the two colors together in an attractive combo. After several attempts with different materials and combos we came up with the AGS Jig.

The materials needed to tie the jig are as follows:

1/8 or ¼ oz jig head                            Black

#1 or 1/0 limerick                                bend hook

Thread                                                Black

Tail                                                      6 strands of Pearl Crystal flash

Rear ½ body                                       Chartreuse Cross Cut Rabbit

Front ½ body                                       Pink Cross Cut Rabbit

To tie the jig insert hook into a vise. Next wrap thread on back third of hook and tie in tail section with tail roughly the length of the hook. Next secure the chartreuse rabbit and wrap half way towards the jig head. Next tie in pink rabbit and continue to warp towards the head with the pink rabbit tying off right next to the jig head. Whip finish to finish jig.

To fish the jig we use a 4” dink float a ½ oz egg sinker slid on the line and then tie in a #7 barrel swivel. Below the swivel tie in 18 to 24 inches of leader material and tie on the jig. Adjust your jig so that floats 12 to 20 inches above the bottom of the river and then let it float with the current down the stream along likely looking holding water in search of steelhead. As your fishing your float make sure are mending the line to ensure your getting a drag free float.

The best conditions to fish the AGS jig is when the river has that perfect steelhead green color and as the water drops into the clear low water conditions that most steelheaders have such tough time catching fish in. Go tie up some AGS jigs and catch a steelhead or if you just can’t find what there biting on a given day then try the AGS Jig and I think you will happy. Good luck and go catch some steelhead.
